Nore Academy

Consultation for opening a new SEMH school on the Isle of Sheppey

Alternative Learning Trust (ALT) has been selected to open a new provision on the Isle of Sheppey through a re-brokering process between the Department for Education (DfE) and Sabden Trust. We have worked with the Sabden Trust over the past few months for ensuring an effective handover for the school. Known as Nore Academy, the new school will serve 120 students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs in their secondary phase of education. Nore Academy will be co-located within the same site as our new satellite AP provision, known as Estuary Academy, which set to open in September 2024.

The successful opening of Nore Academy will be a significant milestone for the Isle of Sheppey. As the only SEND school on the island, ALT will work diligently to support children with SEMH needs. We will ensure the provision of high-quality education and support so that students will leave our school as successful, independent, and proud young people who are ready for their next steps in further education or gainful employment.

Our curriculum offer will be designed to allow our children to succeed academically and will instil in them a wide variety of skills needed to become active citizens within their local community. We will implement a cross-curricular approach to teaching to allow for greater flexibility as well as allowing students to develop a positive relationship with learning. In addition, the development of strong core skills in literacy and numeracy will be supported by practical learning outside of our classrooms, thereby providing our students with the aspiration and core skills necessary as part of their preparation for adulthood. For the personal development of each child, the Nore Academy will provide strong therapeutic and holistic interventions to allow our students to lead a meaningful outside of our school borders.  Admissions to Nore Academy will follow the referrals policy from Kent County Council, who will name children to our school following an assessment of their Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs).

As part of the pre-opening process, ALT is currently conducting our statutory Section 10 consultation. The consultation period will last from 16th of July 2024 until 16th of September 2024.
